State funding for the college could significantly help jumpstart redevelopment efforts, which would need to move quickly to keep a 2029 opening for a new Tampa Bay Rays stadium in play.

Hillsborough College would lease all property other than their campus area to the Rays with a long-term lease, not less than 99 years. If public funding goes to the stadium or related amenities, its ownership would be transferred to the county, which would keep the team’s owners from having to pay property taxes

On Jan. 30, Rafael Padron will play a program of mostly Spanish and Latin American music at the Hillsborough College Dale Mabry Guitar Series.

The timeline closely aligns with public statements from Rays ownership, which has said it is targeting an April 2029 opening for a new ballpark.

The governor is expected to provide further insight on how the state might support the Rays’ plans. The MLB commissioner likely will tout the benefits of a new ballpark.
