The statue is the latest honor for the 44-year-old former WNBA star, who retired in 2022 and was named as the first managing director for USA Woman’s National Team earlier this year. The five-time Olympic gold medalist and 13-time WNBA All-Star will be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in September.

Bird spent her entire 21-year WNBA career with the Storm. She's not only recognized as a franchise icon, but as one of the best WNBA players of all-time. After retiring following the 2022 WNBA season, Bird was quickly inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as part of its 2025 class.

University of Connecticut great and five-time Olympic gold medalist Sue Bird will have a statue unveiled in her honor in Seattle. It's the first time in WNBA history that a statue has been dedicated to a former player. Bird was the No. 1 pick in the 2002 WNBA Draft and she's been with the Seattle Storm ever since.
