HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) - With the new season on the horizon, the top-ranked and defending national champion UConn women’s basketball team made their return to Hartford and put on a show for fans who were excited to see their Huskies back in action.

The UConn women’s basketball team maintained its No. 1 ranking in the Week 1 AP Top 25 poll after a 2-0 start to the regular season.

South Carolina women's basketball will play UConn at least once the next two seasons and Dawn Staley addressed those claiming Gamecocks "ducked" the series.

The program will retire Bird's No. 10 jersey when the Huskies face Big East rival DePaul on Dec. 7. No current Huskies wear the No. 10 - Qadance Samuels was the most recent player to wear the number before transferring to NC State this offseason - as Bird's digits will join Rebecca Lobo's No. 50 and Swin Cash's No. 32 in the rafters.

At this point of the season, many teams are still figuring out their identity, but the Gamecocks' 69-52 win over the Trojans showed they are on the right track. UCLA, Texas and LSU once again round out the top five.
