Best known for his 1970s Frog and Toad picture books, heralded as classics of children’s literature, award-winning author and illustrator Arnold Lobel lived in Park Slope, at 603 3rd Street, from 1973 to the early 1980s. During this time, he came out as gay to his wife and children, and although he never publicly discussed his homosexuality, it is believed that the characters of Frog and Toad allowed Lobel to quietly express his gay identity. Lobel died from AIDS #OnThisDate December 4, 1987. #n
