Pittsburgh's Finest! George Benson, embracing Phyllis after her performance at Mikell's in July 1980. The line before the show extended down the block; a young Ray Chew was her musical director; and not only Mr. Benson, the iconic Miles Davis dropped by to watch her perform. 🤩 🎶The Sunshine In My Life | Phyllis Hyman

This interview aired on Dec 30, 1986. It was the Living All Alone era, and a new beginning for Phyllis. Although she had been dealt some career blows, she pressed forward and found a way to make a living. If only that one-woman show had come to fruition. Video credit: K. Ford | Phyllis Hyman

To be called "Brother" or "Sister" in the 70s was met with some resistance and fear. People felt it insulted their intelligence and was overly used. Some even believed it was a way to get them to lower their guard and be robbed or something worse. The quote in the photo is what Phyllis said when asked how she felt being called "Sister." It was all love and good vibes to her. Quote - NY Amsterdam News, Apr 10, 1976 🎶Deliver The Love | Phyllis Hyman

"I met Phyllis when I was 12 years old at a dude ranch in Colorado. We stayed in contact all those years growing up. When she was trying to get into the industry, she would come and stay at my house in Jersey City and hang out. She would rehearse with Soul Generation at the house a lot. Soul Generation recorded a song called One Thing On My Mind and I thought that would be a great song for Phyllis, so I introduced her to that song, and she recorded it. We remained good friends until her death. A

Pittsburgh's Finest! George Benson is one of the most influential jazz guitarists and singers of our time. It was quite an honor for Phyllis to have his support. "It's been really beautiful having people like Natalie Cole and George Benson - who's another Pittsburgh-born performer - come up to me and tell me I'm next in line...People like George are great. They're a real inspiration to me because there are times when I feel insecure about what I'm doing..." - Phyllis Hyman, Black Music & Jazz Re
