Today we remember Deputy John “Maricopa Slim” Powers. He was killed in the line of duty on November 5, 1914. Earlier this year, we learned he did not have a headstone. We laid one for him back in September. Maricopa Slim was well known before he was murdered. On November 5, 1914, the Al G. Barnes circus train pulled into Maricopa from Phoenix for a water stop. Deputy John Powers had begun to run along the train toward a fight, when Patrick Meehan jumped from a train car firing at Powers. Powers
